What is Geminivirus?

Plant viruses are very dangerous organisms which cause damage to plants. The name geminivirus came from a family of viruses which cause diseases in plants.

How to detect the Geminivirus?

The common symptoms of geminiviruses are Yellow mosaic, yellow curling, stunting, mottling and reduced yields. Early stages short internodes and stoppage of growth is most commonly seen.

How the virus is transmitted?

Generally, this virus is not transmitted by mechanical means. It is only transmitted by Insects. Leafhoppers and whiteflies are the main transmitters of these diseases.

How whiteflies transmit this disease?

Research suggests that whitefly acquires virus within 30 minutes of feeding on affected hosts and transmits the virus after 15-30 minutes of feeding on new plants. This insect can be caused as a vector for 10-12 days and throughout the life of the insect.

Which crops are most affected?

Gemini virus impacts many vegetable crops like beans, soybeans, cotton, potato and tomato

How to control gemini virus in fields?

1.Gemini virus management includes starting with resistant cultivars and virus- and vector-free transplants and propagative plants. 2.Protection of young plants in open fields is can be provided by row covers or nets. 3.Removing and destruction of virus infected plants in open fields include roguing infected plants and insect vector management. 4.Application of recommended insecticide to manage vectors (whiteflies and leafhoppers) is important. 5.For annual crops not growing the same crop for a period of two to three months will help to reduce infestation. 6.Integrated Pest management approach to be adopted based on the biology and ecology of the virus and vector and the crop production system.
