How to grow Silage Maize?

Following Practices are to be adopted for growing silage Maize:1.Apply 3-5 tons per acre of completely decomposed farm yard manure uniformly across the field 10 to 15 days before sowing for better soil health and crop yield. 2.Apply 10 kg Zinc Sulphate (21%) per acre uniformly across field 10-15 days before sowing. Do not mix zinc with other fertilizers especially Phosphorus fertilizers3.Plant with a spacing of 24 inches between rows and 7 inches between seeds. Ensure maintaining of 39,000 plants per acre. Plant seeds at 1.5-2 inch depth for uniform emergence 4.At the time of sowing, apply 25 kg Urea, 75 Kg DAP and 50 Kg Muriate of Potash per acre. Ensure proper soil moisture at the time of application 5. To control early stage insects (shoot fly and shoot borer) spray of any broad spectrum contact insecticide. 6.As second dose apply 55-60 kg urea per acre. Ensure sufficient soil moisture at the time of application, if required, irrigate the field. 7.At Flowering stage Apply 55-60 kg urea and 10 Kg Muriate of Potash per acre. Ensure sufficient soil moisture at the time of application, if required, irrigate the field. 8.Continue keeping sufficient soil moisture throughout grain development stage for better silage quality and yield. 9. Harvest at half milkline/ soft dough stage or at 75-90 days for better silage quality and dry matter production. Follow standard guidelines of silage making for better silage quality10. Chop the crop in to the length of 4 to 6 cm and pack into the silo trench11. Press the chopped crop in the trench thoroughly with a tractor or bullock to remove air trapped in and raise it one metre above the ground level. To prepare quality silage create completely anaerobic conditions by regularly pressing every 50cm thick layer of chaffed fodder12. Ensure airtight packing of the silo-trench by covering the pressed & chaffed fodder with waterproof plastic sheet. Edges of the sheet may be sealed by mud plastering. Gunny bags/ bricks may be placed over the polysheet to avoid any damage due to stormy winds13. Keep an occasional watch and if there is any crack or hole, plug it immediately. Silage will be ready to use after 45 days14. Open the silo-trench from one side only and take out the daily requirement for feeding the cattle. The remaining silage, if kept covered, stays good till used.
